Reviews
I overall enjoyed my stay in this hostel and would stay here again. I stayed in a 6-bed all-female room. The bunk beds were perfect! Other hostels take notes! Almost completely black-out curtains on every bed, multiple outlets, shelves, cupboard, and mirror. Plus the mattresses were pretty comfortable.
The staff are friendly.
The bar is pretty small, but there's another room that's good for doing work. WiFi is decent. There is a fridge and microwave, but not full kitchen.
It's about a 15 min walk from the train/bus station and about 10 minutes from the harbor. Lots of great restaurants and shopping!
There isn't laundry, but there are a few laundromats nearby.
Only other thing that kinda sucked is there was only one bathroom for 6 women and it got pretty nasty.
Otherwise nice place!
About 10min walk (down, a little climb on the way back:) from/to station, the 4 women bedroom dorms had a private (very small) bathroom with toilet, all functional and clean. The room is spacious so don’t feel like you are on top of each other, beds come with pillows and duvet, a stool that also functions as a storage for stuff. Curtains allow for intimacy and each bunker has plugs and little shelves. Common areas are small but there’s a large courtyard if weather is nice. Staff was very friendly. A good option in Marseille especially for solo travellers. Ps: bring your own towel as otherwise it’s €4
I had to stay for a night in a mixed dorm. Very clean, and well equipped bunk with private box, a long shelf, charging point and automatic light switch. Besides, each guest is alloted a hung chest/trunk that serves as a stool. The short haired lady attended me. She's sweet.
Great location, lovely artsy place to stay. Room was very hot and we couldn’t do anything about it. Their no food policy is also a bit unreasonable in my opinion. And the internet was extremely slow it’s almost nonfunctional.
I've stayed in a myriad of hostels across multiple countries, and this is one of the worst. None of the second floor showers work (for men at least), meaning all the men from 2 floors have to share the only single-occupancy bathroom on the first floor. Location point on Hostel World is ~400m away, and around a corner from the actual hostel, making it a nightmare to find. The staff is largely apathetic and dismissive of any concerns, and will pretend to not understand English. Storage lockers are tiny and will not fit any realistically sized luggage, and do not have built in locks, bring your own. Location-wise, the nearby streets are filthy and reek of piss. Unfortunately, I strongly recommend avoiding this one.
FEMALE TRAVELLERS BE AWARE
During my stay at The People Hostel, I encountered a situation where I was humiliated and threatened to be physically hurt by another guest within the premises. Shockingly, this incident took place in front of the hostel's reception, yet no measures were taken to address the aggressor or ensure my, and others' safety and well-being.
Having been threatened, I had no choice but to leave the hostel prematurely. To my dismay, when I requested a refund for the two nights I couldn't stay due to the hostile environment, the manager declined my request. Despite my efforts to communicate with her about the situation, I was met with refusal to discuss the matter.
This lack of responsiveness and failure to address security concerns is deeply concerning. What is particularly alarming is that, instead of taking swift and appropriate action against the aggressor, the hostel let me leave and allowed the aggressor to remain on the premises. A professional and respectful establishment should prioritize the safety of their guests and promptly address any incidents to create a secure environment.
Moreover, if you want to be independent in terms of food, this is not the right address. While the photos show that they have a well equipped kitchen, I was shocked to find out that there was only a small dining room that has a worn out electric tea kettle and a worn out microwave and that's it. The area is so dodgy I was harassed by drugged men going back to the hostel at only 10:30pm.
Well done MADAME LA RESPONSABLE (Manager in french) on saving on 40 euros that you refused to refund even though the aggression took place in your premises, right before the receptionist's eyes that didn't take any measures to ensure my safety and the safety of others.
I stayed here with a friend in an 8-bunk room with no ensuite bathroom. There was however a sink in the room which was convenient. The air conditioning was great, since it was very hot during our stay. The courtyard is lovely and feels …
